Antique map titled 'Hellas seu Graciae (..)'. This is an authentic antique map of the Greece by Jan Janssonius. The map was published in Amsterdam, circa 1653. This striking 17th century map of Greece was based on “Totius Graeciae Descriptio,” a large 8 sheet work by Nikolaos Sophianos, published in 1540. The map presents a fine distinction of the Greek territories form mythical times to the founding of the Roman Empire and establishment of Christianity. The map is embellished with a decorative distance scale and title cartouche featuring two armored soldiers.

Jan Janssonius (also known as Johann or Jan Jansson or Janszoon) (1588-1664) was a renowned geographer and publisher of the seventeenth century, when the Dutch dominated map publishing in Europe. Born in Arnhem, Jan was first exposed to the trade via his father, who was also a bookseller and publisher. In 1612, Jan married the daughter of Jodocus Hondius, who was also a prominent mapmaker and seller. Jonssonius’ first maps date from 1616.
