Plate 36: 'Sardinie en Savoijen. Orde der Aankondiging van Maria of der annuntiatie - Orde van St. Mauritius en Lazarus - Koninglijke Militaire orde van Savoyen.' (Sardinia and Savoy. Order of the Most Holy Annunciation - Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus - Military Order of Savoy). The Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation (Ordine Supremo della Santissima Annunziata) is an order of chivalry, or knighthood, originating in mediaeval Italy. It eventually was the pinnacle of the honours system in the Kingdom of Italy, which ceased to be a national order when the kingdom became a republic in 1946. Today, the order continues as a dynastic order under the jurisdiction of the Head of the House of Savoy, Victor Emmanuel, Prince of Naples, who is the order's hereditary Sovereign and Grand Master. The Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus is an order of chivalry awarded by the House of Savoy, the heads of which were formerly Kings of Italy. The order was formed by a union in Italy of the original Order of St Lazarus and the Order of Saint Maurice in 1572 and has around 2,000 members. The Military Order of Savoy was a military honorary order of the Kingdom of Sardinia first, and of the Kingdom of Italy later. This print originates from ‘Geschiedkundige beschrijving der oudere en nieuwere, thans bestaande Ridderorden. - Afbeeldingen der Ridderorden’ by G.L. de Rochemont and J. Bischoff. A rare and expensive work on in 1843 existing cavalier / knight / military orders. Published in Amsterdam, 1843.
