Beschrijving

Antique print titled 'Capture of La Vengeance'. A very fine hand-colored aquatint by T. Sutherland based on an oil painting by T. Whitcombe showing the capture of La Vengeance by a British frigate on August 21st 1800. La Vengeance was a 50-gun 4th rate French frigate launched in 1793 that was captured after a several hour chase and three fierce engagements. She was bought by the Royal Navy but had endured such serious damage during her capture, as the print so vividly shows, that she was considered unfit for active service. She was used as a prison ship in Jamaica and was badly damaged during a storm in 1801 and was broken up shortly afterwards. This print was published in 'The Naval Achievements of Great Britain from the year 1793-1817' by L. Harrison for James Jenkins in 1816, London. This work contained 54 engraved hand-colored aquatints by T. Sutherland, J. Jeakes and Bailey.
