Antique print titled 'Mambrino bred by Lord Grosvenor'. Antique print of Mambrino, grey thoroughbred racehorse, foaled in 1768, bred by John Atkinson of Scholes at whose death became the property of Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor. Retired to Oxford Stud. Original colour-printed lithograph by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, after an 1873 oil painting by Sheldon Williams, for Samuel Sidney’s “The Book of the Horse” printed by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co of London, Paris and New York circa 1874.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the quality of superb chromolithographic illustrations for publication was exceptional. Many of the colour-printed lithographs for Cassells book of the horse were finished with hand-colour and highlighting. They are some of the finest illustrations that have ever been printed of horses.
Condition: Good. General age-related toning, minor wear and soiling. Tiny tear and some wear in bottom margin. Piece of tape on top margin verso, no text. Please study image carefully.
